Karuna Mayi hails from Cape Town, South Africa. While completing her bachelor's degree at the University of Cape Town, she became a member of the Bhakti Yoga and Vegetarian Society (BYVS), where she quickly developed a taste and passion for vegetarian cooking and eating. After graduating, Karuna took over the BYVS catering department, which provides delicious vegetarian meals daily at the university campus for 50 to 200 people. In 2000, Karuna traveled to India to study with Kurma Dasa, the esteemed Australian chef, author of Great Vegetarian Dishes and star of the popular cooking show, Cooking with Kurma. Upon returning to Cape Town, Karuna began teaching "Simply Divine Cooking Classes", at cooking schools all over the city. After moving to San Diego, CA in 2004, Karuna studied at the California College of Ayurveda, the leading Ayurvedic school in the USA. Ayurveda teaches that food plays an essential part in one's health and sense of well-being, especially if one eats foods which keep one in balance with one's nature and environment . Thus after completing the three year degree to become a Cinical Ayurvedic Specialist, it was a natural calling to combine her expertise and love of cooking with her knowledge of Ayurvedic principles of diet and lifestyle. The Indian-based recipes in her classes are easy to follow, taking into account that modern fast-paced living often affords us little time to spend in the kitchen. As a mother, Karuna also understands the challenge for parents to prepare healthy, nutritious meals that kids actually want to eat. You will leave the class with a mind full of information on health and nutrition and exciting new cooking ideas, and a belly full of the delicious meal you have learned to prepare. |
